Professor Zou, Professor Wen, Distinguished Guests, Friends, Ladies and Gentlemen:
It is my great pleasure to join you on this splendid, joyful occasion.  October lies at the heart of the most beautiful season of the year, Autumn, and even more so here in Hengyang.  It was on the 1st October when the People’s Republic of China was established 59 years ago; it was 44 years ago on this day that the People’s Republic detonated her first atomic device, an industry for which your University has made a significant contribution; it was on this day, 18 years ago, that my third daughter was born; and of course, today, it is the 50th anniversary of the University of South China.
I would like to take this opportunity, on behalf of the University of Glamorgan, my colleagues, and all overseas friends of the University of South China here today, to wholeheartedly congratulate you on the University’s 50th anniversary and for the impressive accomplishments over the past five decades that your University has achieved.
The University of Glamorgan shares the same modern vision with the University of South China; we are both committed to becoming the first class international universities with the aim of delivering an excellent learning environment of the highest standard for our students.  We enjoy a cordial, friendly relationship; over the past two years we have hosted exchange visits by senior management of both universities and great friendships have been forged.  Memorandums of Understanding for university wide cooperation have been signed and collaborative projects have commenced. There have been 28 members of academic staff and 14 students from USC who have studied or are about to study at the University of Glamorgan.
The renowned Tang poet Wang Bo described quite eloquently “A bosom friend afar brings a distant land near”.  I hope that our presence here today at the University of South China has contributed to bringing China and the United Kingdom closer.  Our long journey to reach Hengyang is not only a symbol of our solid friendship with you and your University, it is indeed a milestone in our relationship and it also marks the beginning of an even more successful era for both universities.
Professor Zou, Professor Wen, Distinguished Guests, Friends, Ladies and Gentlemen, please allow me again to congratulate you on the 50th anniversary of the University of South China.  May I wish you and your families good health, and the University of South China, I am sure, will go from strength to strength in the next 50 years.
Thank you! 谢谢!
