Short videos have grown in popularity across the country in recent years as Internet technology has advanced. Problems and risks arise with popularity.

Short videos, as the proverb goes, "every coin has two sides", are a double-edged sword. Short videos have undeniable advantages. Short videos are easier to create, so viewers can see more original content and gain a better understanding of the producers’ lives and thinking perspectives. This point of view can instill a strong sense of intimacy and empathy in the audience. Simultaneously, viewers can post their feedback on the comment bulletin, which can improve interaction between viewers and creators. So, if we can make the best use of short videos, we will benefit from them.

Meanwhile, many college students can be seen watching short videos at all hours of the day and night. They've obviously become engrossed in watching it. Addiction to short videos is extremely harmful to them. Short videos are another form of mental "opium" in modern times. "Addiction" to browsing short videos has went viral.

Short videos have an "addictive" impact on college students. First, our attention span deteriorates when we, as college students, switch from one video clip to another. Hours pass before we realize it. We tend to lose concentration and independent thinking after becoming addicted to this. Second, our values are being distorted. Many short video platforms have videos with inappropriate content, such as "grandstanding", and watching such videos for an extended period of time is very detrimental to our value cultivation. Finally, there is personal failure. If we college students become addicted to watching short videos, our vision will become blurred and, more importantly, our academic performance will suffer.

It is critical to learn how to become the master of short videos and avoid the issues they cause. Being the master of short videos implies that viewers will control the amount of time they spend watching short videos instead of the other way around. It is vital that we use our time wisely and refrain from wasting this priceless resource on watching short videos.

As far as I am concerned, learning to control how much time we spend watching short videos is akin to learning to control ourselves. Let’s work together to become masters of short videos: watch them in moderation and make them a tool that works for us.   Coco (Zhou Xuan)
